Jim Alabiso rediscovered swimming as a way to rehabilitate after a 2004 bicycling accident required hip replacement surgery and a long recovery. Jim credits his progress to coaching from his swimmer friends and coaches.
His passion for the aquatic sport helped him earn First Place in his age group during his first open water competition of 2011, the Siesta Key H2Open, a 2.5k swim off of Florida’s Gulf coast. Two weeks later, Jim earned Fifth Place in his age group on Florida’s Atlantic coast, in the 1-mile swim of the Hollywood Beach Ocean Challenge. Jim continues with a full schedule of open water competitions and pool competitions for the 2011 season starting with Nike Swim Miami in Biscayne Bay.
During the week, Jim takes breaks from his day-job as a systems architect to do daily swim drills and coach private students at his neighborhood pool, the Church of the Good Shepherd, and at Jacksonville's Cecil Aquatic Center.
Most weekends, Jim enjoys the abundant open water around northeast Florida, swimming off of Jacksonville Beach with the Duval Ocean Swimmers, or with friends in the Matanzas Inlet, south of St. Augustine.
In addition to anticipating several upcoming open water competitions, Jim’s looking forward to an August 2011 trip to California and the chance to swim Lake Tahoe and Alcatraz.
In addition to offering life coaching and swim coaching services with JumpingFish Coaching, Jim is a certified life guard, SCUBA diver and a member of USMS (FACT-HLJ), Piranhas Swim team, USA Swimming and the JaxParks Sailfish Masters.
